Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a tiny parasite.

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the world's most common parasites.   Yet most of those affected never develop signs and symptoms. But for infants born to infected mothers and for people with compromised immune systems — especially those living with HIV/AIDS — toxoplasmosis can be extremely serious.

Toxoplasmosis is most commonly transmitted in cat feces, in infected, undercooked meat and in contaminated drinking water. In rare cases, you can acquire the parasite through an organ transplant or blood transfusion. If you're otherwise healthy, you probably won't know you've been infected, although some people may feel as if they have the flu, with swollen lymph glands and muscle aches that can last a month or more.

Even if you have symptoms of the disease, you can't infect others. But pregnant women can pass toxoplasmosis to their unborn children, who may develop severe health problems before birth or later in life. Immunocompromised people with toxoplasmosis are also at risk of life-threatening illnesses.

If you're generally healthy, you probably won't need any treatment for toxoplasmosis. And if you're pregnant or have lowered immunity, certain medications can help reduce the severity of the infection. The best approach, though, is prevention. A few simple precautions can protect you from the disease.
