Dehydroepiandrosterone - (DHEA)

Integrated Medicine

Treatments

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is marketed as a food supplement in health food stores. It is a powerful hormone that is secreted by the adrenal gland and has male hormone activity like testosterone.  Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid produced in the adrenal gland (located on the top of the kidneys) in the human body. It is unknown whether DHEA causes hormonal effects, however the body breaks down DHEA into the hormones estrogen and testosterone.

The concentration of DHEA is at its max at about the age of 20 and then progressively goes down during the aging process. Supplements are sold to fight the aging process.

How This Supplement Works in Your Body:

For some individuals it improves the overall feeling of well-being. AIDS patients and those with multiple sclerosis have reportedly experienced improvements in their well-being, yet there was no outcome change.

  • boost energy
  • increase strength
  • enhance body’s immunity
  • build muscle
  • reduce amount of fat
  • improve sense of well-being in those living with AIDS or multiple sclerosis

How to Use: Available as: Tablet or capsule form

Cautions: Don’t take if you: Are allergic to DHEA

Consult your doctor if you:

  • Have any chronic health problems
  • Have a family history of cancer
  • Experience any allergies to any medication, food or other substance

Over 55:

Lower doses are advised until a response is determined.

Pregnancy:

Consult with your physician to determine if any benefits of taking DHEA outweigh the risk to your unborn child. Since DHEA is not regulated by the FDA, the risk to an unborn child is unknown.

Breastfeeding:

Whether DHEA passes into milk is unknown. Do not use DHEA while nursing or discontinuing nursing until the medication is complete. Consult your physician for suggestions on maintaining milk supply.

Infants and Children:

It is hazardous to treat infants and children under 2 with any supplement.

Safe dosage:

  • DHEA, as a product, is marketed as a dietary supplement.
  • The dosage is varied among brands. Follow the instructions printed on the label or consult your physician or pharmacist and do not take it with any prescribed or over-the-counter drugs.
  • DHEA, Optimal dosage amounts are unknown. Use caution when taking this drug.

Toxicity:

Information on the comparative-toxicity rating cannot be found in standard references.

DHEA Doesn't Help Alzheimer's Forgetfulness

DHEA, a steroid-like supplement version of a naturally occurring hormone that is often promoted as an anti-aging solution, does not appear to fight Alzheimer’s disease, according to a preliminary study.

Previous studies have found the artificial hormone DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) to be helpful for some patients with the autoimmune disease lupus.

The hormone reaches its highest levels in the body during a person’s 20s, and scientists have questioned whether it could play a role in sustaining mental abilities.

It is not known how DHEA functions in the brain, but preliminary studies in mice have suggested that the hormone may increase memory.

However, the current study found that DHEA did not statistically improve mental function among a group of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

The study involved 28 men and women with Alzheimer’s disease who took 50 milligrams of DHEA two times each day and another 30 individuals who took a placebo.

Researchers note that many participants dropped out during the study, possibly in search of other medications, leaving 19 people in the DHEA group and 14 in the control group at the end of the study.

After three months, there were small improvements in mental functioning among participants in the DHEA group, however the finding was not statistically significant, meaning that it might have been due to chance.

Researchers concluded that more studies are needed to determine whether or not DHEA is helpful for people with Alzheimer's disease.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Reverses Effects of Aging

Bodies change with age -- it's a part of life. And while some things may improve over time, health is generally not one of them. That is why it is vital for elderly people to take care of their bodies to protect against the harmful effects of aging.

One concern for elderly people is the risk of developing diabetes, which is triggered by excess abdominal fat and high insulin levels. However, studies may have found a way to decrease this risk: dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) replacement therapy. DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which peaks at age 20 and gradually declines with age. In fact, by the time one reaches 70, only about 20 percent of the peak amount is still circulating throughout their body.

In order to discover if DHEA replacement could reverse some of the metabolic complications of aging, researchers conducted experiments on rats. They found that DHEA replacement might protect against the insulin resistance brought on by a high-fat diet, as well as lower insulin responsiveness that takes place with aging.

In a study using a MRI measurement of abdominal fat, researchers discovered:

  • Compared to the placebo group, those who received DHEA experienced a decrease in abdomen fat of 10.2 percent (women) and 7.4 percent (men)
  • Both men and women who received DHEA had a 6 percent decrease in subcutaneous abdominal fat (below the skin surface)
  • Those who received DHEA had lower insulin levels during oral glucose tolerance tests than they did at the start of the study
  • No adverse effects of DHEA therapy were discovered
