Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin Sulfate is found in the cartilage, bone, and connective
tissues of most mammals. Studies have shown that Chondroitin Sulfate
aids joint health by helping to rebuild damaged cartilage. Sulfate, a
form of sulfur, is an essential nutrient necessary for the stabilization
of connective tissue.

Glucosamine and
Chondroitin May Help Arthritis
Glucosamine and chondroitin, two animal products marketed as food
supplements, do appear to help relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis. The
authors analyzed 15 previously published studies of the effects of
glucosamine and chondroitin on osteoarthritis. The combined results of
the studies, adjusted for quality and variability in the supplements,
indicated a moderate benefit from glucosamine treatment and a large
benefit from chondroitin treatment.
However, the researchers uncovered some quality problems with previous
research which suggest that the actual benefit of treatment with
glucosamine and chondroitin is likely to be less than the studies
indicate.

Glucosamine
Sulfate May Raise Diabetes Risk
The use of glucosamine sulfate, a popular anti-arthritis supplement, may
contribute to insulin resistance in diabetics or those at risk for the
disease. Insulin resistance -- a decrease in the body's response to the
blood sugar-regulating hormone insulin -- is a condition that is a
precursor to type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes. Increasing insulin
resistance could result in more difficult-to-control blood sugar levels.
A
growing number of the 21 million Americans with osteoarthritis are
turning to glucosamine sulfate supplements to help ease the symptoms of
the painful bone and joint disease. US sales of the supplement, usually
derived from the shells of shellfish, now top $230 million a year,
according to the Nutrition Business Journal.
