The Five Myths of Aging
If you were an alien visiting our planet, you might think Earthlings
never age. Even as awareness about aging rises, most major magazines and
television stations still fail to display vital, older people. Medical
journals, on the other hand, harp on the infirmities of old age. It's no
wonder we fear and even deny our own inevitable aging. (4/6/2003)
The Glass That's Half Full: Optimism and Longevity
It's time to emerge from the doldrums. In fact, you don't have any time
to waste - especially if you want to add quality years to your life.
Mayo Clinic researchers finally gave us the proof we need to kick our
negative friends and loved-ones where it hurts the most - right in the
Take Two Music Lessons in the Golden Years
As Americans get older, healthcare becomes more challenging. It's a fact
that due to recent advances in medicine, people are living longer. The
challenging issue however, is that our nation's elderly are not living

Abhyanga - the Ayurvedic oil massage How can a
ritual so luxuriously relaxing, so blissfully comforting as a full-body
warm oil massage rev up your body and mind, gearing them up for peak
performance? Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old holistic healing tradition
from India, has an explanation for the seeming contradiction.
Ayurveda And The Treatment of Digestive
Disease Healthy digestion assures that all of
the nutrients taken in through eating are assimilated in a healthy manor
into the cells that become you. In other words, you are what you digest!
If your digestion is healthy, your body can produce healthy tissues (dhatus).
When digestion is weak, the tissues of your body such as muscle, blood
and nerve become weak susceptible to disease.

Ayurvedic Herbs These ancient
Indian remedies are said to ease aches and inflammation. A new study
prompted us to take a closer look. We don't usually think of ginger,
turmeric and frankincense as medicinals. Instead the names conjure up
images of a kitchen spice shelf, a tasty curry or an exotic incense.

Part I By far, cancer is the most feared of
all disease. Taunting humanity with the threat of a slow, painful death
it is often the first disease people think they have when they
experience pain or feel a lump in their bodies and the last they want to
talk about. Going to the doctor, patients wait with baited breath for
the phone call that tells them, yes or no.
Part II Part one of this series detailed the
Western understanding of cancer, its pathophysiology, statistics,
screening tests and treatment. In part two of this three part series the
Ayurvedic concepts of gulma, granthi and arbuda shall be introduced.
Principles & Practices of Ayurveda Ayurveda, which literally translated
means "the science or knowledge of life" is the traditional medical
system of India. Its origin dates back an estimated 5-10,000 years, and
it is widely considered to be the oldest form of health care in the
world. It is understood by most scholars that, as knowledge of
spread out from India, it influenced the ancient Chinese system of
medicine, Unani medicine, and the humoral medicine practiced by
Hippocrates in Greece. For this reason, Ayurveda is often referred to as
the "Mother of all healing."
Respiratory Disease Respiratory Disease will afflict every
human being at some time in their life. Whether it’s a
with the common cold or respiratory distress associated with
and asthma, respiratory challenges are a constant source of irritation
and misery for the afflicted.
Respiratory Disease 2 Disorders of the breath affect almost
every human being at some time in their lifetime. Whether due to a
common cold resulting in
bronchitis or something more serious such as
emphysema, the ability of people to simply breath is not
always as easy as it seems.
The concept of
Prakriti A characteristic feature of traditional medicinal systems is that they
consider the individual as a whole, rather than just the disease.
The Secret of Agni (Agni Rahasya) In ancient Vedic thought, the individual soul was
symbolized by fire. Our inner soul, hidden like a secret flame deep
within our hearts, abides inextinguishable throughout all our states of
consciousness of waking, dream and deep sleep. It endures as the witness
through our every birth and death, through all the many sojourns in the
various worlds and planes of existence of our soul’s vast manifestation.
Tridosha: The Science Of Ayurveda Ayurveda is a science of Self
understanding. By understanding your own unique nature or
you can begin to understand how you interact with your environment and
thus make choices that will lead you toward greater health.
Secrets of the Five
Pranas To change something we must alter the
energy which creates it. This fact is true in the practice of Yoga. To
bring about positive changes in body and mind we must understand the
energy through which they work. This is called Prana in Sanskrit,
meaning primary energy. It is sometimes translated as breath or vital
force, though it is more than these.

play a role in regulating metabolism. The DNA in mitochondria, which is
inherited maternally, varies greatly by geographic region.
"I am Eating Healthy Organic Foods, So Why am I Still
Feeling Miserable?" Finally, A Solid Answer! By William Wolcott, Founder, The Healthexcel System of Metabolic Typing
The Metabolic Typing Diet (Doubleday)For many years, so-called nutritional experts advocated a low protein,
low fat, high carbohydrate diet as the perfect diet for all of us. They
promised that we’d lose weight and lower our cholesterol while
simultaneously improving our health and fitness.
Blood Type Diet:
Addiction In this land
of plenty, a conservative estimate calls 4 out of 10 Americans
"addicts." Abused substances include sugar, caffeine,
prescription drugs and street drugs including pot. Addiction can serve
us well once we recognize that substance abuse is a way to obscure
honest, peaceful, self-discovery.
ADHD ADHD is diagnosed by health professionals who
form their opinion by observing a child's behavior. There are no brain
scans, blood tests, or anything else definite that is used during
diagnosis. The problem with this is there are many other problems that
have the same symptoms of
ADHD. Only settle for the diagnosis of
after checking out all of these problems and many more.
AIDS HIV AIDS is a chronic, life-threatening
condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By damaging
or destroying the cells of your immune system, HIV interferes with your
body's ability to effectively fight off viruses, bacteria and fungi that
cause disease. This makes you more susceptible to opportunistic
infections your body would normally resist, such as
meningitis, and to certain types of cancers.
Alzheimer "The Alzheimer's
type of dementia does respond rather well to chelation therapy. Fifteen
Alzheimer's disease patients, in a private clinical setting, were tested
first, then administered chelation therapy, and were observed by loved
ones to have returned to normal, or near normal, functioning. It was a
gratifying experience for everyone involved with the testing and
treatment: diagnosticians, clinicians, health care technicians, the
patients, plus their family and friends."
Questions and Answers About Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases This fact sheet
answers basic questions about arthritis and rheumatic diseases. The
National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)
has other fact sheets and booklets that provide more information about
specific forms of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. NIAMS also has
information about exercise and arthritis, pain and
arthritis, and diet
Arthritis-About Arthritis Arthritis is one of the most common diseases
in this country. It affects millions of adults and half of all people
age 65 and older. Arthritis causes pain and loss of movement.
It can affect joints in any part of the body. It often is a chronic
disease, which means that it can affect you over a long period of time.
The more serious forms can cause swelling, warmth, redness, and pain.
Autism - What is Autism? Autism is a complex developmental disability that
typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a
neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism
impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social
interaction and communication skills. Children and adults with autism
typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication,
social interactions, and leisure or play activities.
Bird flu - Avian
Influenza Type A influenza viruses can infect several animal species, including birds, pigs,
horses, seals and whales. Influenza viruses that infect birds are called
“avian influenza viruses.” Birds are an especially important species
because all known subtypes of influenza A viruses circulate among wild
birds, which are considered the natural hosts for influenza A viruses.
Avian influenza viruses do not usually directly infect humans or
circulate among humans.
In breast cancer, cells in your
breast begin growing abnormally - often for unknown reasons. These
cells divide more rapidly than healthy cells and may spread through
your breast or into other parts of your body. The most common type
of breast cancer begins in the ducts designed to carry milk after
childbirth, but cancer may also occur in the small sacs that produce
milk (lobules) or in other breast tissue.
What is this? Candidiasis has
been around for thousands of years, but it's only since the advent of
antibiotics that it has become a virtual epidemic. Antibiotics are a
factor in the development of candidiasis because they kill off the
friendly bacteria in our systems that keep the common yeast,
albicans, under control. When the
Candida yeast overgrows its bounds, it
causes a variety of symptoms that can range from general fatigue,
bloating, diarrhea, and frequent vaginal infections in women.
Candidiasis Candida is a
which is normally present in the bowel. It feeds on sugars, simple
carbohydrates and fermented products like alcohol and cheese. Everyone
has Candida in the gut but the problem with it only occurs when the
numbers gets out of control. Causes for this can be: too many
antibiotics, a hormone imbalance (the pill is a major factor in this)
stress and poor nutrition. These affect the balance of organisms in the
gut and allow the bad ones to multiply.
Candida Yeast Protection Program - A yeast infection? Yeasts, tiny fungi-like organisms found on plant leaves, flowers and in
soil and saltwater, assist in the decomposition and recycling of plants
Yeasts also play an important role in human culture and
history - imagine a world devoid of beer, wine and bread. Commercially,
yeasts produce alcoholic beverages by fermenting rice, wheat, barley,
and corn, and in the baking industry they are used to help dough to
yeast - a rich source of protein, B vitamins,
folic acid - is often taken as a supplement.
Candida Yeast Protection Program - Freeing the body from Candida and
preventing recurrence In Part I of the Candida Yeast Protection Program we covered the
yeast overgrowth that afflict close to 80 million Americans
each year. This month we outline a five-phase treatment program designed
to free the body of Candida and prevent future recurrences. Phase I
deals with starving Candida through dietary modification. Foods to avoid
and foods to eat freely will be discussed in detail. Phase II deals with
killing Candida with fatty acids, herbal concentrates and antifungal
drugs. Phase III involves counteracting the toxic reactions to dying
yeast cells with fluids, fiber, activated charcoal, digestive aids and
Children Constipation Constipation can undermine
the whole body and it is now known that irregular bowel movements are
directly related to serious health conditions.
Constipation does not
have to be a problem if you will practice prevention with your children
and implement the suggestions found in this article.
Constipation If you
experience constipation for more than 1 week, you should consult your
healthcare provider to determine the cause of your problem. Most people
are suffering as a result of lifestyle changes and choices. For some
people, though, constipation can signal a more serious problem such as a
bowel obstruction or even colon cancer. If your bowel movements smell
foul it is your body giving you a warning signal! Listen to your body.
Definition of Constipation If you’re
like many Americans,
constipation is something you’ve experienced. Over
4 million people each year report being constipated. Cases of colon
cancer are rising steadily. To understand why you may be suffering, you
first need to know exactly what
Diabetes Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your body doesn't
make enough of a hormone called insulin, or if your body doesn't use
insulin the right way. If left untreated, it may result in blindness,
heart attacks, strokes,
kidney failure and amputations. Only half of the
people who have diabetes are diagnosed because in the early stages of
diabetes, there are few symptoms, or the symptoms may be the same as in
other health conditions.
Hepatitis B Virus/HIV -New Developments in the Management of Hepatitis B Virus/HIV Coinfection Since the
introduction of potent antiretroviral therapy, HIV has been successfully
converted from a uniformly fatal illness to a manageable chronic
infection. Correspondingly, during the past 6 years the opportunistic
infections that complicate profound immunosuppression have been replaced
with newer forms of morbidity and even mortality.
or under active thyroid is a disease resulting from deficiency of thyroid
hormone secretion. It manifests as lowered basal
and to a lesser degree as cretinism. Symptoms may include obesity, dry
skin and hair, both of which tend to be lusterless, low blood pressure,
slow pulse, sluggishness of all functions, depressed muscular activity
and goiter. It is measured in the laboratory with a TSH (thyroid
stimulating hormone) test.
- What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is much more common in
women than it is in men. This is because women have less bone mass than
men, they tend to live longer and take in less
calcium, and they need
the female hormone estrogen to keep their bones strong. If men live long
enough, they also are at risk of getting
SARS Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory illness
caused by a coronavirus, called SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV).
SARS was first reported in Asia in February 2003. Over the next few
months, the illness spread to more than two dozen countries in North
America, South America, Europe, and Asia before the SARS global outbreak
of 2003 was contained. This fact sheet gives basic information about the
illness and what CDC has done to control SARS in the United States.
SARS - What is SARS? Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory illness
that was recognized as a global threat in March 2003, after first
appearing in Southern China in November 2002.

Hepatitis C and Ozone Therapy Hepatitis C (HCV) is a global disease with an expanding incidence and
prevalence base. Of massive public health importance,
presents supremely challenging problems in view of its adaptability and
its pathogenic capacity. The unique strategies that HCV utilizes to
parasitize its host make it a formidable enemy and therapeutic
interventions need considerable honing to counter its progress. Ozone,
because of its special biological properties, has theoretical and
practical attributes to make it a potent HCV inactivator.

Tetanus Toxoid Vaccination
Tetanus as a clinical entity is linked to a bacteria, Clostridium tetani.
Obviously, the germ is not as malicious as one may think because it
lives as a harmless commensally in the animal and human intestinal tract
(1). It is not the very presence of the bacteria which causes the
trouble, but the toxins that are produced by the bacteria under
anaerobic conditions, that is, where the bacteria operates in an
environment free of oxygen. These toxins can be spread through the blood
vessels and finally affect the nervous system causing tetanic muscle
contraction and pain. The condition is extremely painful and potentially

Therapy (HRT) It seemed the perfect
match for us "women of a certain age" an
easy-to-swallow pill that could soothe our
menopausal symptoms, keep our bones strong, protect
us from heart disease, and lower our risk of colon
cancer. But alas, our love affair with menopausal
hormone therapy (HT), which used to be called
hormone replacement therapy, came to an abrupt end
last summer when researchers leading the Women's
Health Initiative (WHI) published their startling
findings about the therapy.
Hot flashes Hot
flashes, or more correctly called hot flush, is the most
common complaint of menopausal women. Up to 80 percent
of women experience them to some degree, with up to 40
percent suffering enough to seek medical attention.
While some women never have a hot flash, most are
inconvenienced for a year of two. For some women flashes
may persist up to 5, even 10 years.
Liver Toxins More than ever before in the history of
mankind, human beings need to have healthy livers to break down the
chemicals that have crept into our environment. If you talk to
radiologists and gastroenterologists who are looking at people's livers
today they will tell you that the condition "Fatty Liver" affects more
than 50% of people over the age of 50!
Menopause A woman’s menopause is defined as the cessation of
menstruation for six to twelve months in older women. In most
industrialized nations it is accompanied by
insomnia, headaches, irritability, fatigue and vaginal dryness, not to mention hot
flashes, which 65-80% of American women will experience.
Menopause - Alternative Therapies During
Menopause n 1997, about 42 percent of U.S. adults used some type of alternative
therapy, for a total expenditure of $27 billion. Acupuncture and several
dietary supplements, such as soy, isoflavone,
and black cohosh, have been advocated for treatment of menopausal
symptoms, but the extent of their use in the general population is
unknown. Newton and colleagues surveyed women enrolled in a large
managed-care health plan to assess the prevalence of alternative
treatments for menopausal symptoms and the characteristics of women
who chose such therapies.
