A new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes may be managed with diet and exercise as well as other healthy habits. But just because you've got your condition under control, you still need to be vigilant for signs of a problem. There are several situations that can change your blood sugar levels, some of which may mean you need temporary or permanent medication for diabetes. Here are a few of the common reasons you could develop the need for insulin:

Temporary insulin therapy may also be used to overcome very high glucose when type 2 diabetes is first diagnosed. Once the glucose is under control, oral medication will usually do the trick.

Some people who have type 2 use rapid-acting insulin occasionally when they're eating a large meal. The insulin covers the extra carbohydrate in the meal and brings their blood glucose back to normal levels after the meal.

When you're ill, your body's under a lot of stress. This can cause your blood glucose to go a little crazy. Even though you have type 2 diabetes, insulin is sometimes the best way to get things back under control. However, once you're back up to speed, you can probably return to your regular management plan.

As you age, oral medications might not control your blood glucose as well as they should. To get good control and stay healthy, you might have to start using insulin.
