People with diabetes typically have elevated levels of fatty particles in their blood known as triglycerides, which is thought to be one contributor to their increased risk for heart disease. Oils from a variety of fish, such as sardines, are thought to have beneficial effects on blood triglyceride concentrations in people with diabetes. A review of 26 separate studies concluded that fish oil may be of benefit in people who have diabetes and elevated triglyceride levels. Specifically, 2 to 5 teaspoons of fish oil a day were shown to reduce triglyceride levels by an average of 30 to 50 percent.

Unfortunately, this reduction was accompanied by a small increase in the levels of LDL cholesterol, another fatty particle that has been connected with the development of heart disease. Blood glucose levels may also be slightly increased by the daily use of fish oil.

The healthiest way to get the benefits of fish is to replace the red meat you eat with fish. And if you have high triglyceride levels, ask your doctor about the advisability of including a daily dose of a fish oil supplement.

Diabetes - is a group of diseases that affect the way your body uses blood sugar (glucose). This sugar is vital to your health because it's your body's main source of fuel.
