Inexpensive, Non-Painful & Safe Treatment of Warts

A small study published recently compared the effectiveness of applying duct tape to the common wart (known as Verruca vulgaris) to traditional cryotherapy, which includes a series of treatments with liquid nitrogen.

The drawbacks of traditional cryotherapy are:

  • Several visits are often needed for effective treatment, therefore increasing treatment cost considerably over duct tape.
  • As children are the most prone to get warts, cryotherapy can be hard to implement, as it can be painful and scary.

The researchers are excited about their results as tape "occlusion", as it's called, could prove to be an inexpensive, convenient and relatively painless treatment alternative. As they studied patients ranging from 3 to 22 years of age, this treatment could be widely applicable to adults.

The patients received either a maximum of six cryotherapy treatments every two to three weeks, or two months of duct tape therapy.

Duct tape therapy consisted of the patients applying a piece of duct tape about the same size as the wart and leaving it on for six days. During that time, if the tape fell off, another piece would be applied. At the end of every six-day period, the patients soaked the wart in water and rubbed it with a pumice stone or emery board. The next morning a new piece of tape would be applied, and the six-day cycle would start over.

The investigators found, of those who received duct tape therapy, 85 percent of patients were able to rid themselves of the warts, compared to 60 percent of those who received cryotherapy.
