Keeping the air moist and cool can help treat The Croup Croup - Part 3 Dr. Edward F.Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN
In many ways the best way to treat croup is by mainly keeping the air moist and cool. Children suffer more at night than during the day. Many of the steps and tips mentioned in the previous section apply here equally as well. These tips include: 1) Staying calm. Your child may already be frightened and they need your reassurance. 2) Getting moisture in the air to make it easier for your child to breathe. Take your child into the bathroom, turn on all hot water faucets, close the door, and then sit on the floor together and read a story. 3) Bundling up and taking the child outside for a walk in the fresh air. Cool, moist air is best. 4) Setting up a vaporizer or a croup tent in the child's bedroom. Put a vaporizer under the crib and drape a blanket over the head of the crib to trap the moisture near the child's head. If your child is no longer in a crib you can drape a blanket over an umbrella or card table. Stay with your child to make sure the blanket doesn't fall. With a cool mist vaporizer the air will be quite cold. Dress the child in warm pajamas and place a sheet over the blankets to catch moisture. Don't worry about your child getting chilled. The cool moist air is the important part. As you can see from the above tips that most of what was described in the previous section is mentioned here. That’s because there really isn’t much for anyone to do to change the way they live their lives to help prevent croup, except perhaps not to smoke and provide clean, moist cool air as much as possible. The child’s bedroom and other areas the child frequents must be kept in a certain state for the child to be comfortable. Allowing the child to breathe is of the up most importance. Nothing else should matter. Think about it. Knowing your child is not able to breathe is not only scary for you but scary for the child too. You have to force the child to maintain a good, healthy nutritional plan. This will help your child to keep a healthy body. Because a healthy body can and will fight off all types of viruses. This in turn will allow the body to keep from developing croup and/or many other illnesses. As for the room, as stated above, make it conducive to a relaxing atmosphere for the child. Place a humidifier in his or her room. Again, as mentioned above, having a humidifier in the room will provide the child with many benefits, one of which is a cool, moist room. This will help him or her to sleep better at nights because the air will be cool and moist therefore forcing the air passages between the lungs and throat to be in a relaxed state - not swollen. Another benefit to having cool, moist air is the way the child sleeps. He or she will breathe in the air all night while sleeping. This will not only keep his breathing passages clear, but help to improve the oxygen flow through the child’s body. No matter what it takes, you will need to make changes to not only your own lifestyle but the atmosphere around the child’s home. This includes every room in your house. It may take work and sacrifice. But to have your child breathing easier and without discomfort makes all the difference in the world. Just take the proper steps you need to make to ensure your and your child's atmospheres are suited to his condition. This way he can breathe a sigh of relief knowing he can breathe without discomfort.
