Common Name: RHUBARB, HIMALAYAN RHUBARB, INDIAN RHUBARB, THUZNA,
REVAT CHINNI
Part Used: SEEDS
Habitat: Throughout the valleys in Himalayan region at altitude
of 3200m -5200m.
Uses: Used as purgative and astringent tonic. Its stimulating
effect combined with aspirant properties renders it specially useful in
atonic dyspepsia.
GIT: Used in
both constipation and diarrhea- it is a dose dependent herb. The anthroquinones purge the bowel whilst the tannins astringe and maintain
MUCUS MEMBRANES: Specific for mouth ulcers and ulceration of the whole
GIT (anti-Helicobacter pylori) with pitta signs.
BLEEDING: Stops bleeding from heat- raktapitta conditions-
hemorrhoids, ulcers.
CANCER: Useful adjunct to treatment to clear ama and remove
toxins from the bowel.
It takes about 8 hours to work and should be combined with
anti-spasmodic herbs to prevent griping. Beneficial in clearing the high
pitta and kapha that manifests in dysentery and other damp-heat symptoms
with blood and mucus in the stool- colitis, Crohn's. Used in post-fever
constipation to clear ama. Also used to clear abdominal swelling.2
LIVER: It is a useful cholagogue and may be implicated in acute
hepatitis with heat and cirrhosis with liver congestion. May be useful
as part of a programme that purges small (less than 0.5mm) gallstones
from the gall bladder.3
CHOLESTEROL: Reduces cholesterol (LDL) and is used to treat
obesity.4
GYNAECOLOGY: Clears adhesions and clots in
pitta/kapha problems-
endometriosis, fibroids, dysmenorrhea. Also used in vaginal infections
and STDs.5
MUCUS MEMBRANES: Specific for mouth ulcers and ulceration of the
whole GIT (anti-Helicobacter pylori) with pitta signs.

Constituents:
Anthraquinone glycosides- emodin, aloe-emodin, rhein, sennoside,
Tannins, Phenols, Oxalic acid.1

Pachana- digests toxins, Amanashak- destroys toxins, Anuloma- directs
the flow of vata downwards, a laxative, Rechanam- a medium strength
laxative, Kriminashaka- vermifuge, Gulmanashaka- removes abdominal
tumours and obstructions, Raktashodhana- blood purifier (Charaka,
Ashtanga Hridaya Samhita, Bhavaprakasha)
Contraindications:
Pregnancy, lactation. Vata type Diarrhea with weakness. Not in gout.
Not with physical debility as it drains the energy/ prana downwards
